The thought to take with you

Plan the edits before the shoot, while the creative choices are still open.

Give the video one clear job.

“We need a video” is a format request, not a brief. Start with the change you want to create: help someone recognise a need, understand an unfamiliar service, trust a proposition or take a specific next step. That purpose should shape the script, casting, demonstration and the way the brand appears.

Google’s video creative guidance organises useful principles around attention, branding, connection and direction. Treat those as questions to answer in the work, rather than a formula that guarantees a result. What makes this relevant at the opening? How does someone know whose message it is? Why should they care? What should they do with the information?

Design for the places it will appear.

Plan the placement and its viewing context before filming. A vertical mobile placement, a website feature and an outdoor screen have different demands. Build a shot list that leaves room for reframing and readable graphics. Decide which moments can stand alone, then capture enough material to create coherent shorter versions rather than simply cutting the end off the main film.

Make the message understandable when sound is unavailable, while using sound intentionally where it adds meaning. Prepare accurate captions for spoken content, check contrast and keep essential text clear of interface overlays. Ask someone outside the production team to explain the offer after one viewing. Their answer can reveal a gap that the people familiar with the script no longer notice.

Review attention and meaning together.

A strong opening is useful only if it leads somewhere relevant. Review where people stop watching alongside whether the message and brand are understood. Different platforms define views differently, so record those definitions before comparing reports. A large view count should not quietly become a claim about completed attention or sales.

Keep a small set of distinct opening ideas and learn from their response. Connect the destination to the promise made in the video. When the next step is an enquiry, make it clear what happens afterwards. A considered production plan can create a family of useful assets while maintaining the same central idea. That is a stronger starting point than an expensive hero film with no plan for how it will be used.

From perspective to practice

Put it to work.

  • Write the audience, desired change and next action in one paragraph.
  • Plan each placement, crop and shorter edit before production.
  • Check captions, text legibility, brand recognition and the sound-off experience.
  • Compare like-for-like view definitions and downstream response.
