The thought to take with you
A clear definition of a good lead is more useful than another disconnected dashboard.
Fix the definitions before the connection.
Marketing platforms, website analytics and a sales team can all describe the same journey differently. A click, a form submission, a qualified lead and a signed customer are separate events. Write down what each stage means and who is responsible for updating it. Without that shared language, joining systems can simply make inconsistent data travel faster.
Begin with a small set of business events you can maintain reliably. For a service business, this might be enquiry received, assessed, accepted by sales and closed. Record disqualification reasons consistently. These details help explain whether the campaign is attracting the right need, whether the offer is clear and where follow-up needs attention.
Build the smallest useful feedback loop.
Choose one important journey and trace it from the campaign to the customer record. Assign an owner to each handover. Check timestamps, duplicate handling, channel naming and missing records. Test the journey with a clearly marked internal enquiry, then confirm that the team can find and explain it without a spreadsheet rescue operation.
Google’s enhanced conversions can supplement conversion measurement with hashed first-party data. That is a platform capability, not a substitute for accurate records or appropriate data handling. Decide which information is needed, who can access it and how it will be used before implementing a connection. Bring your organisation’s privacy and security owners into that decision.
Use the signal with its limitations.
A connected system still has gaps. People use different devices, contact the business offline or decline optional tracking. Reports should explain what is observed, what is inferred and what is unavailable. Do not present a cleaner chart as a complete account of every customer interaction.
Review campaign activity and business outcomes together on an agreed schedule. If lead volume rises but the accepted share falls, investigate the message, audience and qualification process before increasing spend. If good leads stall after handover, the next improvement may belong in the sales workflow. The point of measurement is to help the whole business act on a clearer picture, not to make one channel look successful.
From perspective to practice
Put it to work.
- Agree consistent definitions for enquiry, qualified lead and customer.
- Map one journey and assign an owner to every handover.
- Test duplicates, missing fields and internal test records before using the data.
- Document access, permitted uses and measurement gaps with the appropriate owners.
