The thought to take with you
One business objective can need more than one timescale.
Stop making every channel prove the same thing.
A person who has never heard of a business has a different task from someone comparing two final proposals. The first may need to understand why the category or brand matters. The second may need evidence, reassurance and an easy next step. A plan that asks both experiences to generate an immediate form submission can miss the work required before a buyer is ready.
Start with the commercial problem and the audience’s starting point. Is the business unfamiliar, poorly understood, considered too late or losing interested customers at the point of action? These are different problems. Let the diagnosis guide the role of creative, media and the destination instead of assigning a budget split by habit.
Connect the promise across the plan.
Brand work and response activity should share a recognisable proposition. The expression can change by context: a short video introduces the idea, a search ad answers a specific need, and a landing page explains the offer. The customer should recognise the same business and the same underlying value throughout.
Build a measurement plan with more than one horizon. Track immediate outcomes where they are relevant, while giving broader changes in awareness or consideration an appropriate research approach and review period. Agree which evidence would cause a budget change. A single reporting view does not mean every metric must be judged on the same weekly target.
Be careful about cause and credit.
A conversion reported against a channel does not tell you automatically what would have happened without it. Incrementality asks that additional-impact question. IAB’s measurement guidance describes different methods and the importance of matching the approach to the business need. Choose a method that the available data, budget and decision can support.
For a smaller team, the first improvement may be simpler: consistent definitions, documented changes and a joined-up review of customer feedback. Use that foundation to identify the next meaningful test. Avoid cutting all demand-building activity because a short report favours the last visible interaction, or protecting it from scrutiny because its role is longer term. Each investment deserves a clear job and a fair way to assess progress.
From perspective to practice
Put it to work.
- Diagnose the audience problem before choosing channels.
- Write a shared proposition and a distinct role for each activity.
- Agree short-term outcomes and longer-term evidence separately.
- Distinguish attributed results from evidence of additional impact.
